The history of the University of Portsmouth dates back to 1869. Since the first degree was awarded in 1900, the University has maintained its commitment to promoting and maintaining excellence in teaching and research across its five faculties.

The University currently has around 22,000 students, including more than 4,000 overseas students from over 140 countries. A growing reputation for excellence means the University is becoming the preferred destination for many students, tutors and researchers.

The University's aim is to provide an excellent student experience focused on the knowledge and skills essential for roles in the global workplace. The University of Portsmouth is ranked 55th out of 121 universities in the UK in the prestigious Sunday Times University Ranking Table (2014), and is in the top 400 universities worldwide in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings published in 2013.

Research at the University was rated world-class in the latest survey of research quality in UK universities (Research Assessment Exercise 2008). In Applied Mathematics, the University of Portsmouth was ranked equal first with the universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Durham and its research deemed to be internationally excellent.

About Pathway to Education

ABOUT PATHWAY EDUCATION

An Undergraduate Pathway is a single course which is comprised of a series of stages (Stages 1-4) of study which on successful completion results in the award of a Bachelor's. A Postgraduate Pathway is a single course which is comprised of a series of stages of study (Stages 1 - 2) which on successful completion results in the award of a Master's Degree.

Foundation or Stage1 – Otherwise also known as Certificate IV or Tertiary Access - A pre degree programme for students who do not meet university entry requirements. Successful completion leads to progression to year 1 of a UK bachelor degree. The course includes both academic subjects as well as English Language. The tertiary access is an accelareated program for more advanced students.

Diploma Year 1 - Stage 2  - Designed for students who fail to meet the entry requirements for direct entry, but who are still capable of studying at that level. Successful completion leads to the 2nd year of a UK bachelor degree programme. The course includes both academic subjects as well as English Language. Stages 3 and 4 comprise of the 2nd and 3rd year of an honours degree.

Graduate Diploma - A 2 term and accelerated 1 term programme is available for students who have a degree, but not one which is equivalent to a UK degree. Successful completion leads to direct entry to the master degree.
English Language - A presessional English Language programme is available for those who fail to meet the minimum English Language requirements. Please note visa regulations may differ in the case of English Language entry.

Foundation Stage 1 - 5 GCSE passes or equivalent, with a minimum C-grade average overall

                                   or Successful completion of HSC/intermediate certificate (10+2) with minimum pof GPA 2.00 with no subjects less than 45%

                                   IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill)

Diploma Stage 2 - 2 passes in the British GCE or VCE A-Levels or 1 A-Level pass and 2 AS-Level passes

                               or Successful completion of HSC/intermediate certificate (10+2) with minimum GPA 3.0 with no subjects less than 55% (60%

                               for engineering.                           

                               IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill)

Graduate Diploma -A qualification equivalent to a minimum of UK Higher National Diploma (HND), in a relevant subject area where appropriate, and a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.3 on the 4.0 scale, or Bachelor's degree in a professional subject from a public institution -- minimum 2nd Division

                                 IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill)

Other English requirements  - 5.0 (with a minimum of 4.5 in any skill) before pathway  ( 1 semester options available)

                                                - 5.0 (with a minimum of 5.0 in any skill) English + pathway  (10 week and 6 week options available)
