ABOUT A LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION

The liberal arts provide a well-rounded education and a range of intellectual skills rather than a narrow, professional or technical education. It’s an education that provides an overview of the arts, humanities, social sciences, mathematics and natural sciences.

This approach emphasizes broad knowledge of the wider world. It offers a chance to explore a variety of academic disciplines rather than follow a specific set of courses that train students for a single career track.

Why are the liberal arts so valuable?

The value of a liberal arts education is backed up byfacts and statistics. Here are just a few:

  • The earning power of liberal arts grads increases 78% from graduation to retirement; this is a higher rate than non-liberal arts graduates
  • At peak earning age (56-60) liberal arts graduates earned an average of $2,000 more per year than those who majored as undergrads in professional fields
  • The Wall Street Journal reports that liberal arts degrees are preferred for CEOs
  • One in three Fortune 500 CEOs hold degrees in liberal arts
  • 17% of PhD holders earned undergraduate degrees at liberal arts colleges, but only 8% of all bachelor’s degree holders earned their degree at liberal arts colleges

The MAT program (5th year) runs from June to May, allowing you to complete your master’s in just under a year. During this time you’ll immerse yourself in course work and also participate in fieldwork experiences.

When you enroll in the B.A./MAT program, in addition to your undergraduate academic advisor, you will receive special support and guidance from a MAT faculty advisor.

Within this partnership, the program provides access to higher education and support for highly motivated students who exhibit the potential for success, but come from families of low income and lack access to the quality educational preparation necessary to attend college. The program provides direct services designed to promote persistence through degree completion. Furthermore, the program supports innovative educational initiatives, support services and leadership development activities to enhance the student’s chance for academic success.

To be considered for the EOS/EOF program, you must:

  1. demonstrate financial need and a background of historical poverty,
  2. have a family income that falls within the established income eligibility criteria,
  3. demonstrate an educationally disadvantaged background, and
  4. be a U.S. citizen and a resident of New Jersey for 12 months immediately preceding enrollment.

Students enrolled in the EOS/EOF program receive additional grants from the state of New Jersey. In addition, Drew University provides significant additional need-based aid to support EOS students. Students also attend a free summer enrichment program to prepare for success in college and receive extra support services throughout their studies, such as counseling and tutoring. For more information, visit the EOF site.
